Review: Poppy's Bagels & More

Do you consider going out for a yummy morning breakfast spread but are unsure where to head? Recently I was searching for the perfect place to go-I wanted something sit down with an extensive list of options and my counterpart wanted cheap and easy bagels. Reluctantly I agreed, expecting a predictable, uninteresting bagel.

Fortunately, there was nothing predictable about these NY style bagels. Deliciously plump, soft on the inside and crispy on the edges, these bagels make you forget you’re in Charlotte. You may be wondering how they are done so right.

First, they start by making their own dough and NEVER freezing their product. Secondly, they boil their bagels in a kettle before baking-ensuring the beautiful glossy sheen that accumulates on the outside. Finally, they don’t skimp on their product. The bagels are a very generous portion; a much larger size offered than the chain bagel shops that we’ve all visited.

The ambiance in Poppy’s is pleasant. Inside you will find an attentive staff led by owner Ronnie Rippners’ mother Georgeana. Beautifully displayed fresh foods and beverages and a spic and span dining and bathroom area contribute to a delightful ambiance.

If you like your bagels sweet try the honey wheat bagel with maple walnut cream cheese. The chunky walnuts mixed throughout the cream cheese give it an unexpected crunch. Don’t forget to ask for the made-to-order fried eggs with crispy skillet bacon. Be sure to order it on the side as you don’t need anything interfering with this perfect carb delight. You can’t go wrong with any of the bagels on the menu. Another one of my picks; the sesame with strawberry cream cheese. You will be pleasantly surprised as you indulge in the many strawberries that are mixed in the spread. No need to worry salty fans as there is an assortment of salty cream cheese picks available; chunky green olive, scallion and jalapeƱo just to name a few.

Don’t let the name fool you though as they offer many other items besides bagels. Made-to-order omelets and potato pancakes can also be found here. Lunch is their other specialty; with daily homemade soups, salads and sandwich offerings. If you swing by at lunch, you must taste the Waldorf chicken salad; loaded with chunky apples and walnuts it is done just right. The reuben is also a great pick; served toasted and piping hot on marbled rye bread. All their sandwiches are made with Boars Head meats.

Owner Ronnie Rippner likes to offer some surprises so he mixes it up with various daily special offerings such as fresh roasted turkey, homemade brisket or corned beef. Take out is also available with items such as lox and a tasty whitefish spread that can be brought home by the pound. And of course you can take home an assortment of bagels and delicious cream cheese. Do save room for the tempting pastries. The peanut butter chocolate cake is a winner. And oh yes, don’t forget to nosh on a scrumptious blueberry muffin to go!
